Lower East Side Projects

Downtown Art has a history of creating original theater, local festivals, and community events which revolve around our neighborhood, the Lower East Side.  Projects have included original musicals staged in the streets all based on historical events such as the ‘Uprising of the 20,000’ and the ‘Kosher Meat Boycott.’

DTA co-founded LES History Month with FABnyc in 2014.  The celebration has now grown to include over 80 participating community and cultural groups each year during the month of May.

In 2016/17, Downtown Art will co-lead Lower East Side History Month, organize LES Stories/Chalking the LES, produce the LES Community Hero Awards, present a series of events around the collection of LES oral histories, and play a leading role in organizing LES participation the NYC Cultural Plan.

Downtown Art will also place three artists in mini-residencies in LES community groups to support their campaigns for tenants rights and small business survival, and provide free space for community gatherings and meetings.
